Northside Hospital Explains: What is cardiac arrest?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 350,000 cardiac arrests happen outside of hospitals each year—and about 7 in 10 of those happen at home.

Cardiac arrest refers to any event when the heart stops beating and pumping blood to the rest of the body, though it can result from a heart attack. Cardiac arrest is not a heart attack.

Cardiac Electrophysiologist Dr. Thomas Middour of Cardiovascular Group affiliated with Northside Hospital Heart Institute explains the causes of sudden cardiac arrest.

Explained is a series of short videos where Northside experts explain common patient questions.
