How Do I Choose a European Bike Tour?

The best European bike tour isn’t the cheapest or the fanciest. It’s the one that keeps you supported, together, and delighted from the first pedal stroke to the last dinner.

On one of our recent tours in Croatia, I pulled over to help a rider fix a flat tire. Except, she wasn’t one of our riders. She was on another company’s tour, alone on the side of the road, and her guide was nowhere to be found.

I think about her now when someone asks me how to choose a European bike tour. Most tours look alike on a website: pretty photos, maps, a price. The differences show up on the road. Here’s what to look for, based on what we’ve learned scouting, riding, and running tours across Europe.

1. Look hard at the support on the road

Support is the single biggest difference between a dream trip and a stressful one. When I watch riders on other tours, I see the same three struggles again and again.

  • Hills. Riders grinding up climbs they weren’t ready for, when an e-bike would have made the day a joy.
  • Keeping up. Slower riders falling behind and spending the day anxious instead of enjoying the view.
  • Getting lost or breaking down alone. Riders fixing their own mechanicals or reading maps on a corner, with no guide in sight.

Here’s how BRAG handles each of those, and what you should ask any company you’re considering.

Local expertise plus an advocate who’s yours. We work with local outfitters and native guides in every country. We also send an American ambassador who travels with the group and takes care of our riders. You get local knowledge and someone who understands what you expect as an American traveler.

The group rides together. We don’t send you off with a GPS and meet you at the hotel. If speeds vary, we split into two groups so nobody is racing and nobody is left behind.

E-bikes are always an option. And on some tours we strongly recommend them. That isn’t about fitness. It’s about making sure everyone finishes the day smiling.

Support vehicles where they make sense. We run a SAG vehicle wherever the route allows. On boat tours it isn’t possible, and we tell you that up front. Be wary of any company that promises a support van on every route.

Nobody gets lost. Our routes aren’t marked with signs. Instead, we use our own system to make sure no one wanders off course or falls too far behind.

Someone rode it first. Franklin rides every route before guests do. He knows where the tough climb is, where the gravel gets loose, and where the best coffee stop is.

2. Choose a destination by what you’ll experience, not just where it is

Honestly, every destination we ride is wonderful, and the food and wine (or beer, in Belgium) is a highlight everywhere. So instead of asking “which country?”, ask “which experiences call to me?”

BRAG builds every tour around what we call Authenticities: experiences unique to that place that you couldn’t arrange, or wouldn’t think to arrange, on your own. A few examples from our tours:

  • Visiting multi-generational family farms
  • Touring a working marble quarry
  • Making olive oil alongside the people who grow the olives

When you compare tours, look past the route map to the off-bike days. Are the activities generic sightseeing you could book yourself, or real access to local people and traditions? That’s where a great tour earns its price.

3. Compare what’s actually included

Two tours at the same price can be completely different trips. Read the inclusions line-by-line.

Where you sleep. Our hotels are always 4 to 5-star, or deeply authentic to the place. That means converted convents in Portugal, a sea-faring yacht in Croatia, a barge in the Netherlands, and chateaux in the Loire Valley. Ask whether lodging is chosen for character or just convenience.

What you eat. We include most, if not all, meals, including multi-course dinners. Many tours include breakfast only, and dinners in Europe add up fast. Do the math before you compare prices.

What’s off the bike. Our activities are vetted and authentic, not filler. Ask what’s included versus offered as a paid add-on.

What you ride. Our bikes come from local outfitters, suited to the local terrain, well- maintained, and often refreshed every two years. Ask how old the fleet is and whether e-bikes are available.

4. Judge value, not price

Our prices are among the lowest for this kind of tour aimed at American travelers. But I’d never tell you to choose us, or anyone, on price alone.

Value comes from the work you never see. We spend an enormous amount of time scouting and vetting every trip: the routes, the hotels, the activities, and the local guides. We hold high standards for how we spend our time and money, and it shows on the road.

The best proof of value isn’t a price tag. It’s how many people come back. We have a ton of repeat riders, and that tells you more than any brochure can. Ask any company you’re considering how many of its guests return.

Questions to ask before you book

  • Does the group ride together, and what happens if I’m slower than everyone else?
  • Who is with us on the road, and is there someone looking out for me specifically?
  • Are e-bikes available, and do you recommend one for this route?
  • Is there a support vehicle/well-prepared guide? If not, what happens if I get a flat or can’t finish?
  • How do you make sure riders don’t get lost?
  • Has someone from your company ridden this exact route?
  • Which meals are included, and which activities cost extra?
  • How old are the bikes?
  • How many of your guests come back for another tour?

Red flags: vague answers about support, “self-guided” fine print on a tour sold as guided, breakfast-only meal plans hidden behind a low price, and nobody who can tell you what the route is like firsthand.

The bottom line

Choose the company that has done the homework so you don’t have to. Look for real support on the road, experiences you couldn’t create on your own, inclusions that match the price, and riders who keep coming back.

And if you ever find yourself fixing a flat alone on a foreign back road, you’ll know you picked the wrong tour.
