It’s hard to make new friends and build community as we age, but there’s something about being on a bike ride with others that changes that. Maybe it’s the vulnerability of exhaustion that strips us down to our most authentic selves, or the natural rhythm of cycling side by side that creates intimacy.
There’s no pretense when you’re 50 miles into a ride and someone offers to share their energy bar, laughing off that wrong turn, or when your group naturally slows down to help someone with a flat tire. The usual social barriers—professional status, age gaps, neighborhood differences—seem to melt away when you’re all just trying to make it those last few miles.
Cycling together creates a space where conversations flow naturally and genuine community form almost effortlessly, as if the simple act of pedaling forward breaks down the walls we build around ourselves.
Community is the Heart of BRAG
When you first hear about the Bicycle Ride Across Georgia, you might imagine it’s simply about cycling through beautiful landscapes, conquering challenging hills, and experiencing the charm of small-town Georgia. While all of that is undeniably true, anyone who participates in BRAG will tell you there’s something deeper that sets this event apart from any other cycling adventure: community.
However, community isn’t just a nice-to-have feature of BRAG—it’s crucial! Our community is the beating heart that pumps life into every mile, every conversation, every shared struggle up a steep hill, and every celebration at day’s end. It’s what transforms a collection of individual cyclists into something far greater: a traveling village on wheels that creates lasting connections, nurtures personal growth, and values every single person who becomes part of the journey.

Building Community: More Than Just Riding Together
The magic of BRAG’s community doesn’t happen by accident. From the moment registration opens, the organizers understand they’re not just coordinating a bike ride—they’re orchestrating the creation of a fairly intimate society that will share an intense, week-long experience together and carry on long past the event. This very intentional approach to community building begins long before the first pedal stroke.
Consider how BRAG brings together people who might never otherwise cross paths. There’s the retired teacher from Savannah riding alongside the software engineer from Atlanta. The grandmother who took up cycling in her fifties finds herself sharing stories with a college student on summer break. A group of friends who’ve been riding together for decades welcomes a nervous first-timer who’s never done anything like this before. These aren’t chance encounters—they’re the natural result of creating space where authentic connections can flourish.

The route design itself fosters community. Unlike many cycling events where participants spread out across vast distances and rarely interact, BRAG’s structure encourages natural gathering points. Rest stops become social hubs where conversations spark over shared snacks and water refills. The manageable daily distances mean riders naturally cluster together, creating opportunities for the kind of organic interactions that build friendships. Even the choice of small towns as overnight stops contributes to this community feeling—everyone’s staying in the same general area, eating at the same restaurants, sharing the same experiences of discovering these Georgia gems.
But perhaps most importantly, BRAG creates community by embracing cyclists of all abilities and backgrounds. This isn’t an elite racing event where only the fastest survive. It’s a celebration of cycling that welcomes everyone from serious athletes training for centuries to casual riders who dust off their bikes once a year for this special week. This inclusivity is fundamental to BRAG’s community philosophy—everyone belongs, everyone has something to contribute, and everyone’s journey matters.

Nurturing Community: The Daily Rhythms of Connection
Once BRAG begins, the community doesn’t just maintain itself—it deepens and evolves through sharing the rhythms of daily life on the road. These patterns of connection happen both by design and through the beautiful spontaneity that emerges when people share challenging and rewarding experiences together.
Each morning begins with an almost ritualistic preparation that subtly reinforces community bonds. Bags are loaded onto the Uhauls, bike tires are pumped, coffee is had, and conversations naturally develop around shared concerns: “How are you feeling today?” “Did you check the weather?” “Want to ride together for a while?” These seemingly simple interactions create threads of connection that weave together throughout the day.
The ride itself becomes a moving community where relationships deepen with each mile. Riding side by side creates a unique intimacy—there’s something about the rhythm of synchronized pedaling and the singular focus on the road ahead that opens people up in ways that might not happen in other settings. Stories emerge about we each got into cycling cycling, what challenges we’re facing in life, dreams we’re pursuing, or simply observations about the beautiful countryside rolling by. These conversations often become the foundation for friendships that last long after BRAG ends.

Rest stops serve as crucial community gathering points where the social fabric of BRAG is continuously rewoven. Here, faster riders catch up with those taking their time, they share experiences, and encouragement flows freely. It’s common to see someone struggling with a mechanical issue surrounded by fellow riders offering help, tools, and expertise. No one is left behind, not because of any formal rule, but because the community culture naturally embraces mutual support.
Weather challenges often serve as surprise community catalysts. When the occasional storm rolls in, riders naturally look out for each other, sharing shelter and encouragement. Hot, humid days create a common suffering that paradoxically brings people together—there’s nothing quite like complaining about the patent Georgia heat to bond a group of cyclists. These challenges remind everyone that they’re in this together, creating a collective resilience that individual riders might not possess on their own.
The evening gatherings in Georgia’s small towns represent community at its most vibrant. After a day on the road, BRAG riders mix in with the locals when we converge on local restaurants, parks, and post-ride revelries. We don’t force these social events—they’re the natural coming together of people who experience something meaningful and want to share it. Stories from the day are imparted, plans for tomorrow are discussed, and the bonds that form on the road strengthen over shared meals and conversation. The town concerts held each evening at BRAG are never meant to only serve our riders. BRAG invites and encourages citizens from the town to attend and interact with our riders!
Big BRAG is an annual, weeklong, cross-state bike ride that takes place during the first full week of each June. The route changes every year, stopping in different Georgia towns and cities along the way. Big BRAG routes are mapped out, patrolled by local safety authorities & law enforcement and include rest stops and SAG support.
More Than Just Passing Through: BRAG Forges Lasting Partnerships
Behind every successful BRAG ride lies months of meticulous planning and community partnership that begins almost immediately after the previous year’s riders head home. BRAG organizers understand that creating meaningful community connections requires far more than simply mapping out scenic routes—it demands building authentic relationships with the small Georgia towns that open their doors to hundreds of visiting cyclists. This planning process involves extensive collaboration with town authorities, local police departments, and school officials to ensure that BRAG’s arrival brings maximum benefit to host communities while creating engaging experiences for riders.

The partnership goes well beyond logistics. BRAG organizers work closely with local businesses, restaurants, and attractions to help them prepare for and capitalize on the economic opportunity that comes with hosting hundreds of visitors. Understanding that many small towns may be unfamiliar with hosting large cycling events, BRAG provide a comprehensive Town Hosting Handbook that guides communities through everything from crowd management to showcasing local culture and attractions. This resource helps ensure that each town can make the most of BRAG’s visit—not just financially, but as an opportunity to share their unique character and charm with visitors who might never otherwise discover these hidden Georgia gems otherwise. The result is a true partnership where BRAG riders gain authentic experiences of small-town Southern hospitality, while host communities benefit from high visibility, economic impact, and the chance to share their stories with enthusiastic visitors who genuinely appreciate what makes each town special.

Valuing Community: Recognition, Respect, and Lasting Impact
BRAG’s commitment to valuing community goes beyond simply creating opportunities for connection. Every participant is a valuable member of the BRAG family, regardless of their cycling ability, experience level, or background. This philosophy of value and respect permeates every aspect of the event and contributes to why BRAG community bonds run so deep.
The event’s approach to celebrating achievements embodies this community value. While there are no prizes for finishing first or covering the most miles, there’s tremendous recognition for personal accomplishments. First-time finishers are met with the same enthusiasm as twenty-year veterans. Riders who overcome personal challenges—whether physical, emotional, or simply the challenge of trying something completely new—find themselves in a large community that understands and appreciates their journey. This inclusive celebration extends to every aspect of the BRAG experience, from our sponsor Northside Hospital, who shows up with genuine engagement and wellness support, to the way achievements recognize and value both large and small equally.
This valuation extends to how BRAG treats the communities it visits. Rather than simply passing through Georgia’s small towns as temporary visitors, BRAG participants to engage meaningfully with local communities. This creates a reciprocal relationship where BRAG riders support local businesses and experience authentic Southern hospitality, while small towns benefit economically and get to showcase their unique character to hundreds of visitors. This mutual respect models how communities can interact in ways that benefit everyone.
The volunteer network that makes BRAG possible represents another dimension of community. These unwaivering individuals, many of them BRAG alumni themselves, understand that they’re not just providing logistical support—they’re helping to nurture the community experience that makes BRAG special. Their enthusiasm, encouragement, and genuine care for participants’ wellbeing reinforces the message that everyone matters and everyone’s experience is valuable.
Perhaps most tellingly, BRAG values community by creating space for it to extend beyond the event itself. The connections that form during those intense days on Georgia roads often evolve into lasting friendships, ongoing cycling partnerships, and networks of mutual support. Many riders report that their BRAG connections enrich their lives in ways that extend far beyond cycling, providing them with friends across Georgia and beyond, riding partners for other adventures, and a sense of belonging to something larger than themselves.
More Than a Sponsor: Northside Hospital’s Commitment to BRAG

Northside Hospital’s generous sponsorship has been instrumental in making BRAG’s vibrant community possible, providing not only crucial financial support but also meaningful wellness resources that enhance the entire experience. Their partnership goes far beyond traditional sponsorship—Northside Hospital brings health and wellness demonstrations directly to BRAG events, hosts engaging block parties that become community highlights, and ensures that riders have access to healthcare expertise throughout their journey. Northside Hospital’s commitment demonstrates how healthcare partnerships can strengthen community events by aligning their mission of promoting wellness with BRAG’s goal of bringing people together through the joy and challenge of cycling across Georgia.

The Ripple Effect: How BRAG Community Extends Beyond the Ride
The BRAG community doesn’t end when riders pack up their bikes and head home. Instead, it ripples outward in countless ways, influencing how participants approach community in their daily lives and inspiring them to seek and create similar connections elsewhere.
Many BRAG veterans speak about how the experience changes their perspective on what’s possible when people come together around common interests and values. They return home more likely to join local cycling clubs, participate in community events, or simply be more open to connecting with strangers who might become friends. The BRAG experience serves as a powerful reminder that authentic community is possible.
The event also inspires many participants to become community builders themselves. Some organize local training rides in preparation for BRAG, creating mini-communities that persist year-round. Others volunteer for cycling events in their own areas, carrying forward the spirit of service and support they experienced during BRAG. Many become ambassadors for cycling itself, encouraging friends and family to discover the joy and community that can be found on two wheels.

That said, BRAG’s commitment to community extends well beyond its own participants. The organization actively supports other cycling events and community initiatives throughout Georgia and beyond. Each Labor Day weekend, BRAG supports the MACC One Love Century ride with free use of it’s ride & rest stop infrastructure. The annual BRAG bike corral at Oakhurst Porchfest shows BRAG’s commitment to broader community engagement, providing practical support for local festivals while promoting cycling culture in Atlanta’s vibrant neighborhoods. These partnerships illustrate a fundamental truth about authentic community building—it’s not about hoarding connections or keeping good things to yourself, but about using our resources to strengthen the entire ecosystem of community activities.
The BRAG Dream Team represents perhaps the most inspiring example of how the BRAG community values and supports all of its members. This group of young riders from communities all over Georgia, along with their dedicated coaches, embodies everything BRAG stands for about inclusion, support, and the transformative power of cycling. The Dream Team doesn’t just participate in BRAG—they inspire all our riders with their enthusiasm, determination, accomplishments, and joy. The way the broader BRAG community embraces, supports, and celebrates the Dream Team demonstrates the depth of the event’s commitment to true community building.

Social media and digital communication allows BRAG community to persist and evolve between events. Our popular Facebook group, ever growing email list, and other digital gathering places keep the connections alive throughout the year, sharing training tips, organizing reunion rides, and maintaining the relationships that forge on Georgia roads. These digital extensions of the BRAG community demonstrate how meaningful the in-person connections really are—people actively work to maintain them across time and distance.
The Lasting Legacy of BRAG Community
As BRAG continues to evolve and grow, its commitment to community remains constant and essential. In a world where authentic connection can feel increasingly rare, BRAG offers something genuinely special: proof that you can still create, nurture and value community intentionally. It demonstrates that when people come together around to share experiences and offer mutual support, something magical happens that transcends the original activity.
The bicycles, the beautiful Georgia scenery, and the physical challenge of the ride are all important elements of BRAG. But it’s the community—that invisible thread that connects hundreds of individual riders into something greater—that transforms a week of cycling into a life-changing experience. It’s what brings people back year after year, what they talk about long after their legs recover, and what they remember when they think about what BRAG really means.
Celebrating community as a core value, BRAG offers more than just a great bike ride. Our ride offers a vision of what’s possible when we prioritize connection, embrace inclusivity, and create space for authentic relationships to flourish. In doing so, it doesn’t just serve its participants—it contributes to a broader understanding of how community can be built, nurtured, and valued in all aspects of our lives.
For anyone who experiences the magic of the BRAG community, the message is clear: we’re all stronger, happier, and more fulfilled when we ride together.
Additional BRAG events throughout the year include Winter Ride on the coast in February and Spring TuneUp in April.
